Charlotte Haunted Houses

Charlotte Haunted Houses

Elizabeth is not the only haunted area in Charlotte NC...not to be outdone, the Historic Fourth Ward will be offering Haunted Carriage Rides both October 30 and 31...

Expect to be spooked while trotting through Fourth Ward and a few other exceptional haunts during the evening hours from 6:00-11:00.

Beware of the stranger sitting next to you, as stories of paranormal activity, public executions, the uptown morgue and ghost hunter tales are delivered to your frightened mind.

The horror begins at Charlotte's center square...Trade and Tryon.

This is no shabby tour, it includes several of Charlotte's oldest, grandest, haunted homes along with a few historical sites, including Old Fire Station #4 (now a fire museum), Alexander Michael's (now a restaurant)  and old St. Peter's Hospital (now condominiums), plus the deadliest tree, Charlotte's hanging tree at Settler's Lane and the Old Carolina Theater.

You'll learn the history on those that (as rumors have it) haven't  left Charlotte in a very, very,  long time: folks like Firefighter Pruitt L. Black, unfortunate patients that died at St Peter's (and where they may be residing today), the old bootlegger on 7th and Poplar, and as your good fortune may have it, you'll also be passing by the Overcash house.

The spirit that lingers here is believed to be that of a woman whose life ended on a wicked fall down the steps. One broken neck later, you may still be able to see her face in the window.

What's a haunted carriage ride without viewing the 'hanging tree' at Settler's Lane? This is where an estimated 28 executions took place. Not a place where you'll feel comfortable hanging around after dark.

And, last but not least, a visit to the Old Carolina Theater.  The balcony is home to a bevy of ghosts. There are also a few old hands that are rather loud ghosts, preferring to busy themselves backstage.

The Tainted House

The tainted house  is (by far) the scariest house on the street for fellow home owners.

It seems there is at least one in every neighborhood. I'm not talking about the house that is tainted with Chinese drywall or oozing with black mold.

Not even a reference to it being haunted by spirits and strange sightings...other than its current inhabitants.

I am talking about that one home in the neighborhood that: is sold every few years,
has regular police visits,
always has inhabitants that go nuts in some fashion, has never had the good fortune in performing the job for which it was intended-love/home.

AT first take, this is not obvious for the newest members of the neighborhood.

But, for the established residents, it is. Especially, for those that live on the very same street as the tainted house.

Every time the real estate 'for sale'  sign goes up, so does an eyebrow.

Who will be behind door #3 when it sells this time?

Will it be, the woman with out-of-control, running, screaming, rule breaking kids?

Kids that had influence on your fine little pedigrees?

At first, you mistakenly invited them in to join yours during a Kool-Aid moment...ahh, you could never take that moment back, now, could you?

There they were, like stray cats you gave milk to...back on your front porch stoop every day.

A couple years passed. It was a long lesson...and then, one day, back on the market it went...Next.

Or, will they be like the old man that appeared to be a shut in?

Except for the daily stroll out for his paper, no one ever saw him.

No blinds tilted open...shades drawn tight. Silence and suspicion.

Was that guy being hidden by the fed's, a recluse or a perv?

Each day you drove by the house and wondered (and you still wonder)...then the for sale sign went up again.

How about the three hot women that moved in, and have a constant flow of cars and men coming in and out, at all hours of the night? A little loud, a little distracting.

That doesn't really subscribe to the residential suburbia that you had in mind for your neighborhood, now does it?

Your teenage boys like it, so does your husband...and you, not so much. Ahhh....and, there's the sign again.
